Lime begins stock pricing for scooters and bike rides

People living in targeted neighborhoods in Grand Rapids can enjoy greater access to micromobility transportation options through a new initiative.

Lime, the scooter and e-bike sharing company with fleets in Grand Rapids, is now offering equity zone rates for riders in areas such as Roosevelt Park, John Ball Park and Garfield Park. The new pricing includes an automatic 30% discount for journeys west and south of the city centre.

The initiative aims to help areas traditionally underserved by existing public transport modes while promoting cleaner air and safer streets.

Equity zone pricing will be available to passengers living or working in the targeted neighborhoods and will not require any documentation or proof of need.

“Lime has always placed equity at the heart of our program in Grand Rapids because at Lime, we believe everyone should have access to safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation, regardless of income or zip code,” said LeAaron Foley, director of government relations at Lime. .

Previously, the transit company introduced the Lime Access program in Grand Rapids, which offers reduced fares to anyone who receives municipal, state or federal benefits. The new Equity Zone pricing will complement the Lime Access program.

“We will work proactively with the city and with community groups like the Garfield Park, Roosevelt Park and John Ball Park neighborhood associations; West Michigan Urban League; and the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition to ensure residents are aware of this opportunity and take advantage of this service,” Foley said.

Grand Rapids’ targeted neighborhoods consist of 17 census tracts with higher poverty, higher unemployment, and lower education rates than other neighborhoods in the city.

Scooter’s Bike Shop owner, Scooter Landes, has been sharing the joy of cycling for over 45 years in Souderton, Montgomery County

SOUDERTON BOROUGH, Pa. (WPVI) — Scooter Landes says it was a cross-country bike ride that helped him understand life after college.

“I had a lot of time to think about six weeks on the bike,” he said. “It was an adventure.”

He opened Scooter’s Bike Shop in 1975 in Souderton, Pennsylvania.

Landes says he’s been cycling his whole life and enjoyed it, so he wanted to share that feeling of joy with others.

“Making people aware of the joys and benefits of cycling is a big part of getting into this industry,” he said.

Landes says that in addition to being a fun activity, biking also has many benefits.

“It’s a low-impact aerobic activity that people can do late in life,” he said.

He says cycling is also great for those with the environment in mind as “it’s a green activity”.

The company has evolved over the past few decades and Landes has a bike for everyone and every aspect of riding.

“We carry a full line of Specialized and Cannondale bikes,” he said. “Everything from road bikes to kids’ bikes to family bikes – hybrids.”

He says hybrids are good for riding on paved surfaces or gravel trails.

And the latest craze – e-bikes, which are pedal-assist e-bikes.

“It’s probably the fastest growing segment of the business right now,” says Landes.

He says Class 3 e-bikes can go up to 28 miles per hour but are completely quiet, making them a popular choice.

Landes says electric bikes are attracting more and more people to cycling.

“It brings people out who normally wouldn’t,” he said. “It takes the wind and the hills out of the equation.”

He says the appeal of an e-bike is that the rider still has to pedal, but it extends their range.

The store also carries a variety of accessories, both for repair and safety, to ensure riders are properly equipped before hitting the road.

His son, Zach, also works in the store with him.

Landes says it’s special to be able to have this kind of relationship with his son.

“We do a lot of repairs,” he said. “We have three repair stations.”

He says he feels blessed to have been able to do this to earn a living in his hometown.

E-scooter, bike-sharing program coming to Sarasota soon

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Fleets of electric bicycles and scooters are hitting the streets of Sarasota.

This week, the Sarasota City Commission paved the way for Veo, a Chicago-based electric scooter and bike-sharing provider, to roll out scooter fleets across the city. The city said its staff have begun evaluating areas where geofencing can be used to enforce parking rules and corral scooters in busy areas. The service should be available in early March.

Around 350-400 electric scooters (seated and standing) and 50-75 bicycles (traditional and pedal-assisted) will initially be available for rental. Fleets can increase if certain usage requirements are met.

Residents and visitors will be able to access the scooters via a mobile app. They will pay $1 to unlock a scooter and 37 cents per minute to ride one. Bike rental is 50 cents per half hour. Discounted rates are available for low-income users who qualify.

“We are thrilled to bring these convenient, safe and cost-effective transportation options to Sarasota,” said Mayor Erik Arroyo. “Having a micro-mobility program will help fill the gaps in our transportation network for first and last mile journeys to help our citizens get where they want and need to go. I look forward to this transformative and successful partnership with Veo.

Electric scooter and bicycle company GoTrax receive an ‘F’ rating from the Better Business Bureau

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – GoTrax, a company selling electric scooters, hoverboards and e-bikes, has been rated “F” by the Better Business Bureau after an investigation sparked by hundreds of complaints.

The “F” rating stems from a collection of complaints about the company’s behavior in the marketplace.

“We issue warnings like this to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions,” said Leslie Blackwell, BBB spokesperson serving Central Virginia.

BBB Central Virginia has identified multiple victims in the area and received complaints alleging that GoTrax products, regardless of where they were purchased, were defective when they arrived.

Consumers have reported that when attempting to contact GoTrax customer service for a refund or replacement, they are often ignored. If they received a response, consumers added that they had been sent defective or broken replacement products.

Of the 285 complaints reported, 220 of these consumers had a problem with their product.

GoTrax products are sold on Amazon, as well as Walmart, Target, Dunham’s, Academy Sports and other retailers.

Denver could make scooter and bike a more permanent fixture on city streets

SOUDERTON >> Scott Landes can easily list a lot of good things about bikes.

“They are relatively inexpensive.

“They are in good health.”

“They are green. They don’t harm the planet.

“It’s a low impact aerobic activity. “

Plus, “They’re fun” and “They’re cool”.

At the Souderton Borough Council meeting on April 3 where Landes’s Scooter’s Bike Shop was the focal point of business, some council members recalled their own wheelie days.

Landes, who remembers crossing the nearby park to attend classes at Summit Street Elementary School before the school closed and the building was transformed into Souderton Town Hall, hadn’t always planned on owning a bicycle shop. .

After seeing that the Landes often went to slow-speed softball games, Joe Marlin, another of the softball players, suggested that the two take a cross-country bike trip after graduating from college. Landes in 1975, said Landes.

“I thought about it for about five seconds and said, ‘Yeah, that sounds good,’” Landes said.

Departing from the Pacific Ocean, the two covered 900 miles in 12 days and had just crossed from Arizona to New Mexico when Marlin had to leave for health reasons, but Landes, who sent weekly reports to the Souderton Independent , continued.

“It was a real adventure because you really didn’t know where you were going to sleep that night. It was very exciting that way. I loved this aspect, ”said Landes.

Often times, bike shop owners would give him a meal or a place to spend the night, he said.

“They would walk maybe five or 10 miles with me in the morning, to get me on track and go back to open their stores,” Landes said.

Souderton already had a long-standing bicycle shop owned by H. Lloyd Mininger, Landes said, but soon after returning home he opened his own bicycle shop and there were two in the borough of 1975 to 1982.

Landes said he rented a store on West Broad Street on the Strip, including the Broad Theater, “bought about 30 or 40 bikes,” continued to work in his previous job building houses on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and had opened the store on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. .

After a year, he left the other job and joined the company full time.

In 1978, he bought the old Mitzi’s Dress Shop on Main Street and moved the bicycle shop there.

In 1989 he moved again, this time to the current location at 130 N. Main St., right next to his old store.

With the move to the larger store next door, including a spacious basement, he no longer had to store bikes at home in his garage, Landes said.

The current store is the former home of the Frederick shoe store, which has been there for 79 of the 150 years in business, Landes said. Jake Frederick was 93 when he took “early retirement” in 1989, Landes said.

New bicycle sales account for around 65% of its business, with bicycle service accounting for around 35%, Landes said. The store carries the Cannondale and Specialized brands. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. The site is at scootersbikeshop.com.

Landes, who calls himself “a boy from Souderton through and through,” said he never even thought of opening his business in another town.

With many people now shopping for items online, it has become more difficult for brick and mortar stores, but the relationships developed over the years with customers are helping, he said.

The number of independent bicycle dealers in the country continues to decline, as has happened the entire time he’s been in business, he said. When he started there were around 10,000, he said, but now there are less than 3,500.

When he was growing up, learning to ride a bike was a rite of passage, Landes said.

“It was our ticket to mobility,” he said.

“It’s not cool for a lot of kids to ride a bike anymore,” Landes said.

“They need an electronic device to play,” he said, “and they are not allowed to go out on their own.”

People have to be careful where and when they ride, but there are a lot of areas that are good for biking, he said.

One of the bikes presented at the borough council meeting was an electric bike.

It’s an example of how bikes have gotten more complicated, said Rich D’Amico, owner of Consign for Design, which features commercial spotlights.

“The technology is just amazing with bikes,” D’Amico said.

He encouraged those who shop online or at chain stores to try local retailers as well.

“You’re going to get service,” D’Amico said.
